Deciphering The ‘Y’ Chromosome – Chapter 6

“Men’s Beauty Standards” read the newspaper headline on page 3. ‘What happened to inner beauty?’ The inner me questioned. As my eyes scan the content of the article my heart sinks. I don’t fit. The article had photoshoot pictures of celebrities like the teenage sensation Justin Bieber and I was nothing in comparison. ‘Yea you’re a fat pig’ my inner voice has started its taunting again. Why am I not ‘totally ripped’? – a 17-year-old.

Did you read the paragraph above? Do you see how confusing our world has become? On one side we have ‘be yourself’ posters and on the other, we have set standards. The amount of pressure we put to look a specific way is exhausting. The only set standard should be hygiene. Body shaming has become a major issue. I am sorry, but you can’t make fun of your friend because he is fat. He must be skipping meals to mold himself into your requirements. Being fat is not a crime. At the same time, this doesn’t mean you make fun of someone who is thin and call him a stick. You need to stop making people feel insecure about themselves. Pimples are normal, it’s a sign of puberty. So the next time you cringe at the sight of someone because he has pimples, remember you have them too because it is mundane. Having a great body is a choice, not a necessity. For example – I can get those desired, drool-worthy abs because I want to not because I need to.

I have been made fun of countless times because my height is too short for a guy. Pray, do tell me, who sets these specific criteria to be a guy? Live and let live, my friend. Don’t judge people on how they look. I can be bald or have freakishly long hair and I can do makeup too. These will still fail to define me as a person. Don’t taunt/tease/bully someone for looking a specific way. You might have the looks of a Greek god but if you belittle someone for your amusement you’re just a horrible person. Take it from me, your two minutes of laughter isn’t worth someone’s life.

  1. Everything you have said is so true, today’s “standards” are so niche it’s almost impossible for anyone to fit into any of them!
