An Open Letter To My Younger Self | Guest Post

Hello, Tanya’s followers! You might know me, I’m Lia and I blog at Lost In A Story. I talk mainly about books but recently also more about writing. I don’t know what you want to know about me but here are the basics: I’m 20 years old and live in the Netherlands, I love reading and writing (of course). I hope you enjoy reading my letter to my younger self!

Dear younger me,

You don’t know me, and I don’t think I know you anymore. So much has changed in all these years and so much is going to change in the future.

Right about now, you are the quiet girl in elementary school that nobody really knows. You don’t have friends, only classmates, which you kind of consider to be your friends. They’re not. They’re not friends, they’re just people you know. Friends are there for your when you’re feeling down and they don’t intentionally make you feel down. They stick up for you when you’re betrayed, they don’t betray you. Those people that bully you right now? They will forget about you. Forget about them. They don’t matter. The world is full of bullies, but also full of wonderful people. Focus on the latter. Those wonderful people are out there, you just have got to find them.

In a few years, you will leave elementary school and leave all those people behind, the bullies and your so-called friends. You will be so happy with your new friends, who I also wouldn’t consider real friends by the way. Don’t put your hopes up that much because they will let you down. But after that, things will get better. You will make friends that won’t forget you when you’re not there, friends that you can actually talk to. Life will get so much better. It sucks right now, but don’t give up, you will be loved one day. You will do the things you never thought you’d do. You will write and make friends from all over the world. You will find your voice and make it be heard. You will learn not to care too much about the things other people think. You will learn to accept who you are.

Life isn’t perfect, not right now and it will probably never be perfect, but that doesn’t matter because life’s good. I don’t know where I’ll be in 10 years, or even in 5 years, but I know I’ll get wherever I want to be. Work hard, but don’t forget to have fun every once in a while. Oh and please do not have that sleepover in 6th grade. Just don’t.

Love,

Your older self
