Second Skin | Fiction

second skin

She loathed the person she had become. How dare she put herself first? How dare she speak without a filter? How dare she claim her rights? How dare she decide to be black and white in this colored world? Selfish, materialistic, rebellious and hostile their favorite adjectives to coat her with. They loved it when her face sighed with vulnerability when they described her in these sugar-coated adjectives. They think they are familiar with her essence. They are sure it’s her aura that alludes hatred. Her pessimistic vibe and constant repetitions of the phrase “I don’t care” helps in strengthening their belief in her animosity. The frequency of her blitheness is non-existent. Harsh? Oh! Don’t worry they have treated her worse. These are just words their actions oh my, another level altogether. Their aversion towards her nourishes her belief in this world. What they believe in, is absolute. Alas, they fail to see that her loathsome nature is her second skin. She has built an invisible shield around her. On the inside, the girl living has lost her battle. She is wounded, shattered and carries baggage. Fearfully she hides under hatred because she was incapable and didn’t meet your unrealistic standards. Vengeance a long lost dream, the girl inside is inching her way closer to death. Stumbling over their counterfeit pillars of hoax love. They define love as ‘something out of this world.’ She knows that love is short for endless suffering and having been abused, bruised, assaulted and ignored further strengthens her definition. Bring forth your forces to destruct her. She really ‘doesn’t care.’ If anything she would welcome you. Remember you don’t know her story, you only know what she chooses to show. Her second skin of indifference is plain self-defense.

    1. Amazing piece! I have a lot to learn from you, Tanya. Submit this to a newspaper or a publisher. This could be the basis of the next New York Times’ bestselling novel!
